Theorem
Similar triangles have proportional sides
Geometry • Triangle • Similarity
Formula
If two triangles are similar (AA, SAS or SSS similarity), corresponding sides are in a constant ratio . Areas are then in the ratio , and all corresponding lengths (altitudes, medians, perimeters) in the ratio .
How to use it
- 1AA is usually the cheapest test: two equal angles suffice.
- 2A line parallel to one side of a triangle cuts off a similar triangle.
- 3Write corresponding vertices in matching order before forming ratios.
Worked example
with , . If , find .
Step-by-step
- 1
Why: Ratio of corresponding sides.
- 2
Why: Areas scale as the square of the linear ratio.
Answer
Watch out
Areas scale as and volumes as — using for area is the standard trap.
