Formula

Side of a regular polygon inscribed in a circle

Geometry • Circle • Inscribed Figures

Formula

A regular -gon inscribed in a circle of radius has side ; in particular the inscribed hexagon has side , the square has side (its diagonal being a diameter), and the equilateral triangle has side .

How to use it

  1. 1For the square, use that the diagonal is a diameter: .
  2. 2For the equilateral triangle, the centre lies at distance from each side, so half the side and are the legs of a right triangle with hypotenuse .
  3. 3In a ratio of two inscribed figures the radius cancels, so the answer is a pure number independent of the circle.

Worked example

A regular hexagon is inscribed in a circle of radius cm. Find its perimeter.

Step-by-step

  1. 1
    cm

Why: Each side of an inscribed regular hexagon equals the radius.

  2. 2
    cm

Answer

cm

Watch out

These are inscribed sides, measured to a circumscribing circle; a polygon circumscribed about a circle of the same radius has larger sides. The equilateral triangle's side is , not and not , which is its inradius relation instead.
