Formula
A triangle with sides , , and semi-perimeter has area .
How to use it
- 1Use it only when the three sides are known and no height is: with a base and its height, is far quicker.
- 2Compute first and keep the four factors as exact fractions; halves cancel in pairs and the surd usually simplifies.
- 3It applies to any triangle whatever, so it is the fallback for an awkward piece of a compound figure.
Worked example
Find the area of a triangle whose sides are , and .
Step-by-step
- 1
- 2
Why: The four factors are , , and .
Answer
Watch out
A zero or negative value under the root means the three lengths violate the triangle inequality and enclose nothing. The semi-perimeter is half the perimeter, not the perimeter itself.
