Formula

Speed, distance and time

Arithmetic • Time, Speed and Distance

Formula

For motion at a constant speed, ; equivalently and .

How to use it

  1. 1Check the units agree before dividing: km with hours gives km/hour, metres with seconds gives m/second.
  2. 2When one of the three quantities is shared by two journeys, write both equations and eliminate it.
  3. 3For a journey in stages, add the distances and add the times; the overall speed is their quotient.

Worked example

A cyclist covers km in hours. How long does km take at the same speed?

Step-by-step

  1. 1
    km/hour

Why: Divide distance by time to get the constant speed.

  2. 2
    hours

Answer

hours

Watch out

It holds only for a constant speed. Over a journey made at different speeds the overall figure is total distance divided by total time, which is not the arithmetic mean of the speeds.

Also known as

speed equals distance over time, distance = speed times time, basic kinematics, speed formula
