Locate roots by the sign of at test points

Algebra • Quadratic Equations • Quadratic Inequalities

Statement

Let with and real roots . Then exactly when , and exactly when or . Hence holds precisely when , and .

How to use it

  1. 1Make the leading coefficient positive first, multiplying the equation by if necessary.
  2. 2One root in and the other outside it needs only .
  3. 3Strict inequalities on the roots give strict inequalities on : a root sitting at an endpoint makes zero there.
  4. 4A sign change already forces two distinct real roots, so no separate discriminant check is needed.

Worked example

For which does have one root in and the other in ?

Step-by-step

  1. 1
    ,

Why: An upward parabola lies below the axis only between its roots.

  2. 2

Why: is left of both roots.

  3. 3

Why: lies strictly between the roots.

  4. 4

Why: is right of both roots.

Answer

Watch out

The inequalities reverse if and this is not normalised first. Forcing BOTH roots into one interval needs more than endpoint signs: also the vertex position and a positive discriminant.
