Compare with over the natural numbers

Algebra • Expressions • Inequalities

Statement

To decide for and fixed , test the small values of one by one, then close the tail: if at some and for every , then one step multiplies the left side by at least as much as the right, so the inequality holds for every . Small must be tested individually, because that is where the two sides can cross.

How to use it

  1. 1Tabulate both sides for until the exponential is clearly ahead; the crossings all live in that range.
  2. 2Close the tail with the per-step growth factors: the left side gains a factor , the right side a factor , which shrinks towards as grows.
  3. 3Check equality separately: a strict inequality fails where the two sides are equal, and that is the usual trap.
  4. 4One failing value is enough to refute a claim made for all ; one succeeding value proves nothing about the rest.

Worked example

For which natural numbers is ?

Step-by-step

  1. 1
    : , true. : , false. : , false. : , false. : , true.

Why: The two sides cross twice among the small values, so each has to be tested on its own.

  2. 2
    For :

Why: Each step multiplies by and by less than , so the lead at can never be lost.

  3. 3
    exactly for and

Answer

and every

Watch out

The tail argument needs the growth factor compared at the smallest in the tail, since is largest there. Stopping at the first success is the common error: holds but does not.
