Linearise a system by substituting reciprocals

Algebra • Equations • Simultaneous Equations

Statement

A pair of equations whose every term is , or a constant becomes linear under , ; an equation such as takes that shape after dividing through by , and the final step is to invert and back.

How to use it

  1. 1If every term of a bilinear equation carries or a single variable, divide through by to expose the reciprocals.
  2. 2Solve the resulting linear system by elimination, then report and .
  3. 3Stopping at and is the usual slip; the question asks for and .

Worked example

Solve and .

Step-by-step

  1. 1
    : and

Why: Both equations are linear in the reciprocals.

  2. 2
and add to , so and

    Why: Ordinary elimination.

  3. 3

Why: Invert to return to the original unknowns.

Answer

Watch out

Dividing by silently discards or ; when the original equations are satisfied by that degenerate solution is still a solution of the system as printed, so check it separately before calling the reciprocal answer the only one.
